The Selection by Kiera Cass
From the Publisher…
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
From Me…
I did not realize this was a series, but it seems like a good idea now. The book was good, as the story is compelling. Living in a caste system and being offered a chance to change their circumstances, the main character entered a contest to win the prince. Ironically, she doesn’t want him and actually finds a way to stay at the palace while supposedly helping the prince find his wife. This front is rather silly as it doesn’t go anywhere. She likes him and he obviously likes her.
The dialogue is awfully childish at times, but the protagonist is still likeable. She seems completely unaware of life, and I wanted to reach through the book and shake her at times. Her initial love interest s named Aspen, and hoenstly he is childish and selfish. HE complains about life and dumps America in a fit of stupid pride. Then when he is assigned to the palace, after being drafted into the army, he begins pursuing America again, even though it would be considered treason if she was caught with another boy. You would not risk the life of someone you truly loved just kiss them.
Maxin is very controlled, and hard to like at first. However, he is ultimatelty kind, if not naive. The fact that he thinks of country and family first is easily notable. It makes rooting for him much easier.
I liked the book, and gave it a three because the story lags at times, and the writing is stunted at times. I will probably read the following books, if only to find out who she picks. The best part about this book, is that you can’t tell for sure who will win the girl.
