Shadowland by CM Gray
From the Publisher…
‘I have lived more years than I can remember, probably more than the sum of all your years combined. Kings have called me friend and brigands have sworn to burn the flesh from my bones even if they have to search all seven halls of the shadowland to find me.’
On the night of midwinter’s eve, a storyteller takes his listeners back to the Dark ages and a tale from his youth.
Deserted by its Roman masters, Britain has been invaded by the Saxons at the invitation of Vortigern, traitorous leader of the Britons. Now, as the tribes unite to reclaim their land, one man must rise to lead them and become their true and only king.
From Me…
First of all, I love books like this one! It starts off with a man who has lived an adventure and is retelling the story. IT reminded me instantly of Water for Elephants, which I loved. I have also read retellings of Uther Pendragon, and this one was remarkably unique. As someone who loves the basic Athur adventure, and knows many of its characters and details, I was happy to find that the characters could still surprise me! Though some were blatantly obvious, some identities were hidden and later revealed. Love the intrigue!!!
The writing was very good, with lovely descriptions that put the reader in the middle of the scene. While the beginning is very intriguing, the middle lacks a little oomph. Generally, this happens when characters are introduced and integrated, but it felt most noticeable here.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The magic was present, but not overwhelming. The characters were interesting and compelling. A really fun read that I would definitely recommend.
