Goodreads Synopsis
Sometimes, there is nowhere safe to hide.
It was a typical evening at a mall outside
Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy
flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped
together, and the manager at the video-game store tended to customers. Then the
shooters arrived.

together, and the manager at the video-game store tended to customers. Then the
shooters arrived.
The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes
before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the
effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate
himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to
bury the memory of huddling in a ladies’ room, hopelessly clutching her cell
phone–until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.

But one person wasn’t satisfied with the
shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly
heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is
lying in wait–and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

My Thoughts…
This book is so relevant and timely while being deliciously
entertaining. Without giving away any
spoilers, the book is written in different parts, and the depiction of the
shooting is more than gripping, more than heart breaking, it is utterly
gut-wrenching. Calling it suspense
almost undersells the story, because this is not your garden variety
suspense. This puts you inside of a mass
shooting in a way that I hope I never have to be, while knowing that I live in
a time where this is reality for far too many people.

After the shooting, the lives that were affected intertwine and
develop beautifully. The tragedy
reverberates through the entire story even as it shifts into a more traditional
romantic thriller. Written well, just as
most of Nora Roberts’s books are, and thoroughly enjoyable.

The Characters…
This is where I believe Nora Roberts really shines. While the main characters are obviously endearing
and relatable, they are also broken and flawed.
I, like most people (I think), ended this book in love with Cici. Honestly, I hope I have half of her honesty
and spunk at any point in my life.
