ABL: Shelf Space Updates
Every week I like to take a look back and see what books I have
read, which books I have added to my TBR (to-be read) pile, and which books I
have tossed, i.e. decided I will unfortunately not have enough time in this
life to read. You’ll notice that this
last section will not appear very often, for two very important reasons. I LOATHE getting rid of books and absolutely
hate admitting that I can’t read them all.

everything has been taken from you, what else is there to do but run?
So
that’s what Annabelle does—she runs from Seattle to Washington, DC, through
mountain passes and suburban landscapes, from long lonely roads to college
towns. She’s not ready to think about the why yet, just the how—muscles
burning, heart pumping, feet pounding the earth. But no matter how hard she tries,
she can’t outrun the tragedy from the past year, or the person—The Taker—that
haunts her.

Followed
by Grandpa Ed in his RV and backed by her brother and two friends (her
self-appointed publicity team), Annabelle becomes a reluctant activist as people
connect her journey to the trauma from her past. Her cross-country run gains
media attention and she is cheered on as she crosses state borders, and is even
thrown a block party and given gifts. The support would be nice, if Annabelle
could escape the guilt and the shame from what happened back home. They say it
isn’t her fault, but she can’t feel the truth of that.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by
Heather Morris
The
Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two
Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in
Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the
prisoners marked for survival—literally scratching numbers into his fellow
victims’ arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most
potent symbols of the Holocaust. Lale used the infinitesimal freedom of
movement that this position awarded him to exchange jewels and money taken from
murdered Jews for food to keep others alive. If he had been caught, he would
have been killed; many owed him their survival.

There
have been many books about the Holocaust—and there will be many more. What
makes this one so memorable is Lale Sokolov’s incredible zest for life. He
understood exactly what was in store for him and his fellow prisoners, and he
was determined to survive—not just to survive but to leave the camp with his
dignity and integrity intact, to live his life to the full. Terrible though
this story is, it is also a story of hope and of courage. It is also—almost
unbelievably—a love story. Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified and
shaking, was a young girl. For Lale—a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a
chancer—it was love at first sight, and he determined not only to survive
himself but to ensure that Gita did, too. His story—their story—will make you
weep, but you will also find it uplifting. It shows the very best of humanity
in the very worst of circumstances.

People die, but legends live on.
New York antiquities appraiser Annalisse Drury
recently lost her best friend to murder. The killer’s identity may be linked to
her friend’s expensive missing bracelet—a 500-year-old artifact that carries an
ancient curse, one that unleashes evil upon any who dare wear the jewelry
created for the Persian royal family.

Weeks later, Annalisse sees a matching necklace
at a Manhattan gallery opening. She begs the owner to destroy the cursed piece,
but her pleas fall on deaf ears—despite the unnatural death that occurs during
the opening. With two victims linked to the jewelry, Annalisse is certain she
must act.

October is shaping up to be a big book review month. Just in time for Blogoween
and Blogtober!
Anyway,
I didn’t add any books to my TBR this month.
I know it’s weird, and I have a feeling I will make up for it in this
week. Especially, since I will be
checking out the October new releases. But for now, I will bask in the glory of
my TBR pile progress. I should
celebrate, but I like to celebrate accomplishments by book shopping, and that
seems counterproductive, and yet… new books! Yay!

Tossed
None this week, I have stayed strong and optimistic; however, my
TBR pile grew more than my read pile, so I am obviously losing this battle.
