National Geographic photojournalist Joel Sartore continues his Photo Ark quest, photographing species around the world that are escaping extinction thanks to human efforts.
Joel Sartore’s quest to photograph all the animal species under human care celebrates its 15th year with this collection of photographs. The animals featured in these pages are either destined for extinction or already extinct in the wild but still alive today, thanks to dedication of a heroic group committed to their continued survival. From the majestic Sumatran rhinoceros to the tiny Salt Creek tiger beetle.
Sartore singles out the species most likely to disappear in the next decades, as well as some that have already been lost. Alongside these images are the words of scientists and conservationists who are working to protect and restore populations of endangered species.
My Thoughts…
It’s hard to put into words the effect a book like this can have on a person. Not only are the pictures phenomenal, but the information is truly heartbreaking. I have shown this book to nearly everyone who has come into my house, and my children have flipped through it numerous times. I’m hoping having a resource like this around will help them to learn about and appreciate such beautiful animals.
Most of all, anyone who opens this book will walk away with the imperative that we must do more to protect and save the amazing planet we have been given. We are responsible for the lives and habitats of innocent beings, and we are using that power to take advantage and destroy them. Beyond the environmental impact of our behavior, humans continue to needless hunt, poach, and kill these animals for pleasure.
I wish I could talk about all of the different species in this photobook, but it’s just not possible. Also, I’m not much of a reptile person, so you might notice a trend in the pictures I chose to highlight, but know this: these pictures were so stunning that even someone who could barely look at a snake, could see the wonder and magnificence of each creature.
I can never unsee these faces, and I believe I am a better person because of it. Thank you, Joel Sartore, for using your passion and talent to give these animals a voice.

So many of the animals I had no idea were endangered and some I recently saw at a zoo on our vacation this summer and it’s so odd to think that those are the last ones.
Thank you for being on this tour. Sara @ TLC Book Tours

Hey Sara! Thanks for reading this review. Hopefully you got to read the full version, because for some reason, only a few sentences of my review showed up for a while. Oh well, I loved this book and am encouraging everyone to look through it.
