A spiritualist, an insane asylum, a lost little girl . . .
When Clive, anxious to distract a depressed Henrietta, begs Sergeant Frank Davis for a case, he is assigned to investigating a seemingly boring affair: a spiritualist woman operating in an abandoned schoolhouse on the edge of town who is suspected of robbing people of their valuables. What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta―much to Clive’s dismay―begins to believe the spiritualist’s strange ramblings.
Meanwhile, Elsie begs Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.

My Thoughts
I’m really kind of sad because I have been able to binge listen to the first 5 books in this series, and I know there will be more, but I don’t have them right now.
And I need them right now.
In this most recent installment, things get real and emotional. As the title suggests, Henrietta and Clive lose their unborn child. I was so glad to see this issue portrayed in a book.
Even in today’s society, we don’t talk about miscarriages like we should. We tip toe around it, trying not to upset the parents, usually with the best of intentions. But all of the avoidance only leaves the grieving parents alone with their pain. When I had my first miscarriage, so many people told me quietly about their similar experiences, but none of those people had ever felt like they could talk to me about their pain before.
I’m trying to change that instinct in myself as well. The instinct to not say it, to only confide my trauma in a select few.
It was sad to realize how little we have grown on this issue from the 1930’s. Miscarriages aren’t women’s dirty little secrets, and Henrietta finds her way regardless of the people around her.
As for the remainder of the story, it was more of the wonderfulness I have come to expect from Michelle Cox and this series. Clive wasn’t the perfect husband, and sometimes I want to smack him upside his head, but that makes him a far more realistic husband character.
I adored the addition of the mystical fortune teller. Things seemed even more mysterious with her around, especially since we wrapped um the mob storyline.
Elsie was a great character in A Child Lost because she’s finally maturing and making decisions for herself. She showed her heart and I finally really connected with her on an emotional level.
Just go start this fun mystery series, because, trust me, you won’t be able to stop.
not a fan of…
If you’ve read my other reviews, you might know, I’m not a fan of Stan. He plays a very minor role in this book, but even so, I just want him to go away. He drives me a little crazy.
Just go start this fun mystery series, because, trust me, you won’t be able to stop.
Thanks so much to Michelle Cox and iRead Book Tours for my copy of A Child Lost in exchange for an honest review.
