Zip up your puffer coat, winter has arrived!
When Lexi Davies discovers that her father has sold the fishermen’s cottages she runs as holiday lets and where she also lives, she is heartbroken. Then Oliver Whimsy arrives at the boardwalk and announces that he is the new owner and Lexi realises that the future she was looking forward to enjoying at her cottages is over. Oliver might be handsome, wealthy and very sexy, but he’s new to the island and has already made a terrible impression on the locals. When the Scottish entrepreneur offers Lexi a job, she’s unsure whether she should accept. Unfortunately, she has little alternative if she wants to keep a roof over her head for the winter.
As Lexi gets to know him better, she discovers there’s far more to Oliver Whimsy than she or anyone else had imagined. Just what is the heartache Oliver’s trying so desperately to hide? And why was he so determined to buy the cottages? Lexi wants to find out, but in order to do so she’s going to have to spend rather a lot of time with him…
Winter Whimsy Review
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier. 🙂
My Thoughts
All right, so let’s be honest here: I enjoy romance books. I enjoy their lightness, their engrossing stories, and their real world feel. Reading a contemporary romance doesn’t take me to an epic, imaginary universe, but I am transported nonetheless.
So it came at no surprise that I enjoyed reading Winter Whimsy. This is book three in a series, and while I felt as though there were lots of details I wasn’t’ sure about, most if not all of the information for this installment is provided. There’s definitely some back stories that I would love to hear about, which I guess means I’m going to need to check out the first two books. 😉
A small Scottish village is the perfect setting for this winter romance, that actually went fairly deep with some serious subjects. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the more emotional subplots, when I usually like to focus on the emerging couple. In this way, the story was wonderfully well rounded.
The only reason I wasn’t able to rate this as an obsession is because I simply wasn’t addicted to it. There wasn’t anything particularly new or exciting, but that’s not really what I’m going for in this genre. I just want to see real people fall in love despite obstacles. This might not be the case if I read the first two books, because I may be even more emotionally invested. Maybe I will come back and do an update once I’ve read them all.
Real quick, I have to mention the outstanding cast of characters in Winter Whimsy. Whimsical indeed. I couldn’t imagine a more eclectic or charming group of supporting characters. They gave each page so much life, warmth, and color. Plus, in my mind, I read them all with a Scottish brogue and everything sounds better with a Scottish brogue.
Conclusion
Winter Whimsy is a charming and heartwarming novel, perfect for a cold winter night by the fire. Easily read and enjoyed.
