Book Review: A Killer Motive by Hannah Mary McKinnon
I picked up A Killer Motive because I cannot resist a thriller that mixes true crime with high-stakes mystery and I really appreciate . Hannah Mary McKinnon is known for sharp twists and emotional punches, and this one absolutely delivered.
The Story: A Killer Motive
Six years ago, Stella Dixon snuck her younger brother Max out for a night at the beach. He never came home. The guilt of that choice has haunted her ever since, fueling the creation of her true crime podcast A Killer Motive. Through it, Stella helps other families find closure — the very thing she still longs for.
When she blurts out on live radio that she could solve Max’s case if only she had one clue, someone calls her bluff. A chilling invitation arrives: play a game, follow the rules, and maybe she’ll learn the truth. Then Max’s best friend goes missing, proving the threat is very real. Stella is forced into a cat-and-mouse chase with someone who knows her darkest secrets.
My Thoughts: A Killer Motive
This book had me hooked from the very first chapter. Stella is a protagonist you can root for — flawed, guilt-ridden, but determined. The podcast angle adds a fresh layer, pulling us into the obsession and ethics of true crime storytelling.
The pacing is relentless. Each new “rule” in the game ramps up the tension, and just when you think you know where it’s going, McKinnon pulls the rug out. I found myself constantly questioning who Stella could trust, and the final twist left me reeling in the best way.
What also stood out is the emotional depth. This isn’t just a thriller with shocks for shock’s sake. It’s about grief, guilt, and the lengths we go to for family. McKinnon balances suspense with heart, making the ending hit even harder.

Final Verdict
If you love books by Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, or Lisa Jewell, A Killer Motive needs to be at the top of your list. It’s fast-paced, atmospheric, and full of gasp-worthy reveals. A five-star read for me, and one I’ll be recommending to anyone who loves a smart psychological thriller.
If you’re a thriller and suspense fan, I made a list of some to stuff your kindle with:
