A Story Lake Masterpiece (and My New Personality)
Listen, I’m a simple woman. I see a Lucy Score cover with a disco ball on it, and I immediately clear my schedule and prepare to neglect my adult responsibilities.
If you loved Story of My Life, you already know the vibe of Story Lake, Pennsylvania. It’s quirky, it’s nosy, and it has more drama than a middle school carpool line (and trust me, I know that struggle). In Mistakes Were Made, we are following Zoey Moody, a New York literary agent who is currently a “walking disaster.” She’s broke, her apartment is being turned into a condo, and she’s basically living off the hope that her bestie’s next book will pay her bills.
Enter Gage Bishop.
Gage is a lawyer. He’s also a contractor. He’s organized, he has a five-year plan, and he lives in a converted barn with a golden retriever named Nana. Basically, he is the human personification of “I have my life together,” which makes him the absolute worst person for Zoey to fall for. Naturally, she moves in above his law office.
The Tropes We Live For
- Opposites Attract: He’s a spreadsheet; she’s a glitter explosion.
- Forced Proximity: Landlord/Tenant tension is the elite tier of “stop looking at me like that.”
- Small Town Chaos: Includes a bald eagle named Goose and town meetings that are more entertaining than reality TV.
My Thoughts (The Unfiltered Version)
I devoured this as an audiobook at 2.0x speed because I have zero patience and I needed to know if Gage was going to break his “no distractions” rule.
Spoiler: He breaks it. Hard.
The chemistry between Zoey and Gage starts as a “one-night mistake” and quickly turns into a “maybe we should just move the furniture into one house” situation.
But it’s not all spicy banter and hard hats. Lucy Score actually gets deep here. Zoey’s struggle with being “the mistake” and her journey toward understanding her own neurodivergence (hello, relatable ADHD representation!) actually made me stop snarking for a second and feel things. The Bishop family trauma is heavy, but it makes the payoff so much sweeter.
The Verdict :
Mistakes Were Made by Lucy Score: Book Review
Is it long? Yes. It’s a 500+ page Lucy Score brick. Do I care? Absolutely not. I would read a 900-page book about Gage Bishop’s lawn care routine if she wrote it.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Gage Bishop can “contract” my house any day.)
