Since reading books tends to be such a singular activity and does not necessarily lend itself to socializing, I often wonder if people go through the same frustrations that I do. This is one of the many reasons I have this blog. I have a place that I can air my grievances, and hopefully find some empathetic friends who will listen to my musings. In saying that, I bring you my latest frustration. Let me set the stage.
I began reading a new book series, which I will review later. Anyway, I read the first book and really liked it. The main girl was interesting, and the love interest had tons of potential…then, I read the second book.
The author introduced the two characters and gave them an instant connection. There is another guy in the picture, but things happen, and she chooses the right guy. The two finally get together at the end of book one, not officially dating, but things start to get interesting. So what do you think happens in book 2? We get to see them together, have fun, fight battles, right? No. The guy she didn’t choose comes back into the picture along with this totally unrelated guy the main girl becomes infatuated with. Here is my frustration: why do authors have to ruin books with convoluted love triangles (or in this case squares)?
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good love triangle. But I cannot stand a gratuitous love triangle. In this case, the main character was interested in so many men, and so many men were interested in her, that I couldn’t keep them straight. Plus it makes me wonder what is so amazing about this one girl that all of these men are letting her string them along? Also, it’s infuriating that I couldn’t get invested in anyone because no one was the right one. I need something to route for, otherwise I can’t stay interested. Has anyone else been frustrated by this or something like this?

I can tolerate love triangles when they add to the plot, but not ones that are there purely for the drama.
