I believe this is the first time I have read a book by Karen Rose. I have to say it was really good. The story was well thought out and intricate. In fact, so much so that towards the beginning of the book I was certain that many of the back stories and facts were superfluously confusing. As it turns out, almost all of the stories have a purpose and eventually enliven the overall story.
The main characters weren’t necessarily complex, but were definitely interesting. The killer in the story was a little too maniacal for my test, but a lot of people are intrigued by sociopaths. I say this knowing full well that one of the most intriguing aspects of the book was getting to know the killer through his perspective. In this book the author didn’t just give the reader brief glimpses of the killer, but rather, spent multiple pages in his perspective, even allowing the reader to witness many of his crimes. Some seriously disturbing stuff there.
There are some really good things here. The pace of the book is good, and you will be surprised in the end about the amount of time the book covers. If you are like me, you will feel like the characters and the story have been told over a much longer period of time, rather than the mere days depicted. If you like a mystery or a thriller, check this book out. There is a bit of romance associated with this book, but it is minimal and mostly kept as a secondary plot point.
I like the occasional thriller and I've been meaning to try out Karen Rose's books. I'm glad you liked it.
I don't read too many thrillers because like you said they can be disturbing and they can freak me out for days.

I usually read thriller when I am in the mood or when James Patterson comes out with a book. 😉 They constantly disturb me, but I can't help it. It's like watching a scary movie; I know it will be terrifying and nerve wracking, but for that brief period of time I am definitely not thinking about my problems! In the end, some form of escapism is what we are striving for.
