Great review, Amy. I really like your analogy, as it it spoke to the layers of meaning and the depth of this story.
Amy Ermie says
Glad you liked it. Definitely many layers to this story!!!

Awesome review. I enjoyed this book and hated it- if you know what I mean. Some of the scenes were just so terribly sad. Lee Fullbright was an amazingly detailed at describing abuse. I need to reread as well.

Some of the scenes were too much for me, like when the dog dies. I have a solid "don't touch the dog" rule in all of my entertainment. Plus, Elyse's mom frustrated me bc I felt like she was just as culpable for all of the bad her husband did. Am I being too harsh?

I completely agree that this is a book that improves with multiple readings. Glad we were on the tour together!
Amy Ermie says
SO glad to hear that I am not the only one who reread this!

For me, it was the prose that took me into the book. Having been around all sorts of abuse and seeing what mental instability does to some people and their children and their children's children, I understood the book. That Fullbright was able to capture this so well is beyond amazing. I only wish I can write so well someday.

I would have loved to have had your perspective while reading this book. I think having an understanding of abuse would have given this book an even more powerful meaning.
