I have been posting a lot about this book on
social media and for good reason. First of all, the cover is beautiful. That purple on those flowers, the bright green of the leaves, the road leading anywhere, and that tree canopy. Just beautiful. Then there is the actual book, the story.
Have you ever read a book that just makes you happy? You’re happy to read it, happy to think about it, and happy with the ending? Glory Road was that for me. This was perfect ball of happiness that lifted my spirit every time I opened the cover. Lauren Denton’s writing is so good that I am almost excited to plant my garden this year. I do it every year with my kids, but I am terrible at it. Seriously, I have a black thumb. Bring any plant in my general vicinity and it will commit suicide just to avoid the slow death my care taking will bring. But Jessie made me a believer. I too can garden, so be sure to check out the classic gardening tips opening every chapter.
Speaking of Glory Road’s characters, we need to spend a second talking about Gus. I NEED Gus in my life. I had her in this book for a short period of time, but I need more. If no one is willing to be Gus for me, I’m going to need Ms. Denton to make a sequel ASAP. Don’t think I’m serious, just check out our instagram conversation.
The story itself was inspiring. I understood the emotions expressed and knew exactly how Jessie, Evan, and Gus were feeling in each situation. I could empathize with them, even when I wasn’t sure I had experienced what they were experiencing. Think about that for a second. She wrote three generations of women, in entirely different stages of life, so well that I felt like I was there.
If this story was meant to inspire hope for the future, even while dealing with pain from the past and present, then mission accomplished. Spring is coming, and this book will get you ready for it.
