~Synopsis~
This funny, charming and heartwarming new Christmas novel is USA TODAY bestselling author Sarah Morgan at her festive best!
In the snowy perfection of Aspen, the White family gathers for youngest daughter Rosie’s whirlwind Christmas wedding. First to arrive are the bride’s parents, Maggie and Nick. Their daughter’s marriage is a milestone they are determined to celebrate wholeheartedly, but they are hiding a huge secret of their own: they are on the brink of divorce. After living apart for the last six months, the last thing they need is to be trapped together in an irresistibly romantic winter wonderland.
Rosie’s older sister, Katie, is also dreading the wedding. Worried that impulsive, sweet-hearted Rosie is making a mistake, Katie is determined to save her sister from herself! If only the irritatingly good-looking best man, Jordan, would stop interfering with her plans…
Bride-to-be Rosie loves her fiancé but is having serious second thoughts. Except everyone has arrived—how can she tell them she’s not sure? As the big day gets closer, and emotions run even higher, this is one White family Christmas none of them will ever forget!
~My Thoughts~
What you can’t really get a sense of from the summary is the real hilarity of the scenes and the characters. The summary skips right over the opening of the book, which is Maggie finding out that her daughter is getting married in a month at Christmas. Through this scene alone, I knew I was going to love this book, and I was right.
Though there is romance in this novel, the love that is really developed is the love of a family. Each person seems to be desperately trying to care for the others in spite of their own heartache. Along the way, it feels like every person finds a fulfilling love in a more honest way.
I can’t really do justice to the characters. They are varied and different, but vibrant and charming in their own ways. Maggie is the wonderful mother, who gave so much of herself that she doesn’t know who is left.
Katie is a very determined and successful doctor who was is so focused on her goals that she loses sight of her own desires until life forces her to stop and look.
Rosie is s overwhelmed by the thoughts of others that she can’t think and feel for herself, making it extremely difficult to trust her won heart.
But when these characters interact, in vivid and hysterical detail, this Sarah Morgan really seems to hit her stride as an author. There is a scene where Maggie, who is terrified to fly, is arriving at the airport in Aspen to meet her soon-to-be son-in-law. To deal with her flying nerves and the prospect of pretending to be happily married to her estranged husband, Maggie gets pretty well toasted on the flight. Therefore, the all important meet-the-parents moment takes place while Maggie is drunk, Rosie is mortified, and Nick isn’t quite sure what he should do. I laughed out loud during this scene.
I could totally picture this book as a movie. I would say it’s perfect for a Hallmark Christmas movie, but there are some great sex scenes. I hear that Lifetime is making Christmas movies too, so maybe that would be better, because I really wouldn’t want to give those scenes up. Snowed in a cabin in Aspen…need I say more?
Full of holiday spirit, comedic mastery, and family heart, this is a perfect holiday read.
