The What to Eat When Cookbook REVIEW
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier.
My Thoughts on
The What to Eat When Cookbook…
Why am I more likely to trust this cookbook because it’s published by the National Geographic??? There isn’t any logical reason for this other than I implicitly trust and enjoy their publications so much.
I didn’t read the original book that inspired this cookbook, What To Eat When, but the beginning of this cookbook gives the reader the basic overview of how the system works. Plus there is a whole section about cooking terms and what items should always be in your kitchen. There’s even a bullet point shopping list of ingredients and utensils that every cook should have around.
This cookbook is more than just a group of recipes, The What to Eat When Cookbook provided recipes that will allow you to approach eating and food in a completely different way. I love the idea that we should be eating for out bodies and that our food should work with us and not against us.
I want to mention that I feel like this diet is by no means for everyone. It could be life changing and incredibly healthy for some people, but is very strict about a lot of things, which may make it less appealing to people looking for small changes.
If you don’t feel like making a wholesale change in the way you eat everyday all day, then I would suggest just looking at some of these recipes and incorporating them into your normal menu as I did. My favorite section is the vegetable section as it has some truly original and tasty ideas that I have been trying with my family. It’s nice to change things up and be confident that the food tastes good but is also good for me and my kids.

Not much of a review, I could probably find better on Amazon. Disappointing. One star.
