The Devil and the Heiress Book Blurb
Sparks fly when a runaway heiress bargains with a devilish rogue to escape a marriage of convenience.
No one would guess that beneath Violet Crenshaw’s ladylike demeanor lies the heart of a rebel. American heiresses looking to secure English lords must be on their best behavior, but Violet has other plans. She intends to flee London and the marriage her parents have arranged to become a published author–if only the wickedly handsome earl who inspired her most outrageously sinful character didn’t insist on coming with her.
Christian Halston, Earl of Leigh, has a scheme of his own: escort the surprisingly spirited dollar princess north and use every delicious moment in close quarters to convince Violet to marry him. Christian needs an heiress to rebuild his Scottish estate but the more time he spends with Violet, the more he realizes what he really needs is her–by his side, near his heart, in his bed.
Though Christian’s burning glances offer unholy temptation, Violet has no intention of surrendering herself or her newfound freedom in a permanent deal with the devil. It’s going to take more than pretty words to prove this fortune hunter’s love is true…
The Devil and the Heiress REVIEW
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier. 🙂
My Thoughts About The Devil and the Heiress
4 Stars: Loved this book!
The Devil and the Heiress is book two in Harper St. George’s The Gilded Age Heiresses series. I read book one and heartily recommend that everyone does even though The Devil and the Heiress can absolutely be read as a standalone novel. I just love the characters in book 1, The Heiress Gets a Duke, so much that everyone should read it.
Book #2 shifts the series focus to Violet, who seemed to be a quieter but no less spirited sister. Quieter she may be, but submissive she is not. Violet has her own ideas about her future, and while attempting to thwart her parents, she forgets that she has lived a very sheltered existence and doesn’t know the weary ways of the world.
When Violet trust Christian to help her escape an unwanted marriage, she believes she has found an ally in her bid for matrimonial independence; however, Christian has his own agenda, namely marrying Violet. Both main characters rational plans quickly fall apart when feelings are involved.
Violet is a heroine most people will enjoy mostly because she is easy to sympathize with. Who hasn’t had their lives upended by a pretty face? The heart wants what the heart wants, after all. While I kind of preferred the older Crenshaw sister from book 1 (she had a no nonsense attitude that appealed to me), Violet is charming;y naive and much more indicative of the Victorian woman.
I think I really liked this book because I didn’t instantly fall in love with Christian as a hero. He wasn’t the quintessential good guy, but his character arc is fascinating as is Violets. Their time together proved life changing for both.
Also, just to be clear, the sexy scenes were really enjoyable ;).
Conclusion
Utterly satisfying for historical fiction romance fans.
