Rumors of a ghostly presence haunt Julianne’s Cornish autumn in the series’ charming fourth installment.
What began as a bit of teenage mischief in the village quickly became stories of spooky lights and ghost sightings in the wood. Being sensible, Julianne is more worried about whether she can finish her kids’ costumes in time for the annual Halloween contest—and whether husband Matt and his eager assistants will be selected for the exclusive Brookshire Garden Design Competition. So when everyone in town begins flocking to the local ‘ghost walk’ tours Julianne assures her wide-eyed children it’s just a case of imagination run wild…until she experiences her own brush with the supernatural, that is.
Real or imagined, Julianne can’t shrug off what she saw, or even bring herself to confide in sympathetic Matt for advice. Best friend Kitty is on hand to help, despite her usual family battles, including that of her cousins’ shady new scheme to profit from the town’s ghost mania. But even Julianne’s friends can’t fully understand her need to find a solution this time, one that leads her on a quirky quest from local lore, to meetings with the village’s ragtag paranormal club, and even a creepy abandoned cottage hiding secrets in the woods.
Join Julianne for suspense, surprises, and (of course) heartfelt moments as book four in the series brings an autumn like no other to sleepy Ceffylgwyn.
Cornish Gold at Summer’s End Review
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier. 🙂
My Thoughts
Cornish Gold at Summer’s End is the perfect book to read as the summer comes to a close and fall approaches. I loved getting wrapped up in that fall feeling: talking about pumpkins, leaves changing, halloween costumes, and everything else that comes with the magical time of autumn.
I found myself identifying a lot with Julianne. As a mother of two young kids, I felt like Laura Briggs described that balanced relationship perfectly. The wife, mother, and professional woman all trying to co-exist and thrive, though I’ve never had a supernatural experience like she did.
It is easy to fall in love with the small village and get caught up in Julianne’s daily life, but I found myself wanting a little more a little sooner. The book was a bit slower paced, and I just needed some more intrigue in the front. Or maybe I wasn’t invested enough in the ghostly aspects of the story to get the feeling Laura Briggs was going for.
Conclusion
If you’re looking to get into the fall feels, Cornish Gold at Summer’s End is the perfect book to get you there.
