This witty, slow-burn rom-com is the “ideal beach read.” —Elle
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it’s now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They’ll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.
Emma hadn’t planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka.
It’s supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But when Emma’s toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings, they’re suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected–including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?
Just for The Summer Review
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier. 🙂
My Thoughts
If you’re a fan of Abby Jiminez and romance novels, this book is a must-add to your TBR. I’ll go ahead and say you should add Abby Jimenez’s entire body of work to your TBR. No one is doing mental health rep in books like her. The dedication and research to accurately portray the struggles of anxiety, depression, ptsd, etc. are unmatched.
📚”Just for the Summer” is one of those un-put-downable books that will remind all readers why they love reading so much.
There were so many times I thought we were going to fall into a miscommunication sinkhole, only for the MCs to find open communication and empathy. The curse is a cute beginning plot point but never overwhelms the narrative as Justin and Emma never take it so seriously that it impedes their relationship. Their relationship hurdles are based in real human emotion and trauma, as is their ability to overcome them.
Their were times where Emma’s inability or unwillingness to see reality, her own or her mother’s, frustrated me. However, I also realized I was experiencing the same frustration I fell with myself when I procrastinate a project only to create more stress on myself. I know what I need to do, I know how to do it, but I don’t want to. So, I pretend I don’t need to. Then comes the moment when I can’t pretend anymore and I’m overwhelmed by a situation of my own making. Emma is a perfectly imperfect human, and I love her.
Quick note about the narrators, as we had two, Christine Lakin & Zachary Webber. They were excellent. Perfect tones and voice acting. I was never once brought out of the story by them, and in fact, their intensity lured me in and captivated me.
