Spring Siren is the fourth and final book in The Boardwalk by the Sea series set in a fictional seaside village in Jersey in the Channel islands. This is Jools’ story. Jools is an artist who lives and works with her grandmother on the boardwalk running their small second-hand bookshop overlooking the beach. When her new boyfriend announces that he’s going travelling for a few months Jools is unimpressed and wonders if maybe she should forget about romance. After all, she does have the book group to run from the bookshop and her three best friends, Sacha, Bella and Lexi to keep her busy, as well as the new arrival to the boardwalk who has made her wonder if perhaps her decision to forgo romance could have been a little hasty.
Winter Whimsy Review
As a quick reminder, here is my rating structure:
- 1 star: Did not finish
- 2 Stars: Finished but I do not recommend
- 3 Stars: Liked but could use some improvements
- 4 Stars: Loved this book!
- 5 Stars: Rare. The unput-down-able, binge read obsession.
My star ratings are also based also genre based. I compare all books with books of the same genre. While I would love to believe that my love of books in general transcends all bias, there are genres I prefer over others.
I’m human.
Example: If I read a mystery novel and think it deserves a 5-star rating, then I have compared it to other mystery books, and determined it to be one of my absolute favorites. The unputdownable mystery.
This will hopefully keep me from comparing Outlander, a personal obsession of mine, with the experience of reading The Hate You Give. Both 5 star books for me, but completely and totally different. I couldn’t even try to rate them against each other, so I don’t. Makes my life easier. 🙂
My Thoughts
I got the chance to read book #3 of The Boardwalk by the Sea Series and promised myself I would go back and read the first two books. Unfortunately, as has been the case for many people, my plan in the past year haven’t exactly been followed.
When the tour for book #4, Spring Siren, rolled around, I dove right in knowing that I was probably going to have to backtrack and start the series over when I finished this installment. And I was right.
I’m sad that the series is coming to an end, because I love revisiting these characters, so in a way, I am glad that I get to go back and read the first two. Each book focuses on one of four women who are all friends in a small town, so each installment gives us glimpses of previous characters and how their lives are fairing.
Jools becomes the focus this time around, and my booknerd heart couldn’t be happier. As the owner of a bookshop, Jools holds a special place in my heart. I get her on another level. Of course, her developing relationship with the handsome Marius didn’t dampen my enthusiasm one bit.
The town is idyllic, the characters enchanting, and the love story gave me some much needed light hearted distraction. I can’t wait to start this series over from the very beginning.
Conclusion
Spring Siren is a charming finale to an adorable series about love, romance, and the power of female friendship.
