Moira Wellman has always loved makeovers—helping women find their most beautiful selves. Funny how it’s taken her five years with her abusive boyfriend, Lang, to realize she needs a life makeover. When Moira finally gets the courage to leave Lang, the beachside town of Moonlight Harbor is the perfect place to start over.
Soon Moira is right at home, working as a stylist at Waves Salon, making new friends, saving her clients from beauty blunders and helping the women of Moonlight Harbor find new confidence as well as new looks. When she meets a handsome police officer, she’s more than willing to give him a free haircut. Maybe even her heart. But is she really ready for romance after Lang? And what if her new friend is in hot pursuit of that same cop? This is worse than a bad perm. Life surely can’t get any more difficult. Or can it?
With all the heart and humor readers have come to expect from a Sheila Roberts novel, Beachside Beginnings is the story of one woman finding the courage to live her best life. And where better to live it than at the beach?
My Thoughts
I love this series by Sheila Roberts. It’s essentially about the people living in a small beachside town and what happens to them, how they live together, and how a lot of them fall in love. Beyond the romance, though, there is an essential element of people coming together to create a town and togetherness. Each book in this series has an overarching message of hope that is so beautiful but also really tangible – you can feel hope building as you turn the pages.
The greatest part about this series, beyond its vivid characters and fun plot, is that you don’t need to have read the other books to read any installment. Sure, there are things mentioned that you could know more about, but none of it impacts the plot or takes away from this story.
This story is mostly told from Moira’s POV, but I really enjoyed the bits that were about Pearl too. Pearl is the owner of the hair salon that Moira wroks at when she arrives at Moonlight Harbor. Pearl saves Moira by giving her a job when she literally has no where else to go, but in the end, Moira saves Pearl by helping her see that her life is not over. That the pain from the many tragedies Pearl has experienced does not mean she has to give up.
What starts as small hair transformations, and then a salon makeover, turns into a story about two women pulling themselves out of bad places and transforming their lives. Beachside Beginnings is a survival story, but also a novel about what happens when life has takes nearly everything from you but you find the strength to not only continue, but to flourish.
To hope again.
Beachside Beginnings is so cute and inspiring, I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes Women’s Fiction, ChickLit, or romance. Plus, it’s helping me to read about beaches when I can’t go to one. Who else needs a piña colada?
