Quick Take
Cammy Wrenley is determined to prove she’s more than the coach’s daughter while juggling her thirst for success and lingering feelings for hockey bad boy Jon Paul Dumont, who broke her heart and left without an explanation. Kenna King delivers a second-chance romance packed with electric chemistry and emotional stakes that tiptoe between family loyalty and personal redemption. The second chance is both personal and professional, so it’s all on the line for Jon Paul and Cammy.
What I Loved about this Steamy Second-Chance Hockey Romance
The sexual tension between Cammy and JP is next-level sizzling. There’s a scene on a Zamboni that made me want to take up ice skating, even though that’s absurd. With my lack of coordination and penchant for self injury, reading hockey romances is as close as I should get to a rink.
I especially loved the way the hockey puck itself was used as a communication device between JP and Cammy. Pairing the he fell first scenes with Jon Paul’s later desertion made hockey a part of the plot in a way that was really unique. Though I know the characters had to be cold in an ice rink, I never felt that from any of their scenes.
I also loved that Cammy learnig to score a goal is an ultimate part of the couple’s story. JP is a goalie, Cammy’s dad is his coach, and she is learning from her dad hwo to beat the guy he is against her being with. The metaphors truly abound.
What Didn’t Work for Me
The novel leans heavily on miscommunication as the central obstacle. At times, I cringed when a simple conversation would have averted drama, but miscommuincation is my number 1 book ick and I still really enjoyed the story. If we had another device for conflict, I would have given it 5 stars for sure. As it is, I plan to go back and start the series from the beginning.
Final Thoughts
Match Penalty scores big on steamy romance and heartfelt moments yet occasionally trips over its own fumbled pass of miscommunication. If you crave a spicy hockey romance with emotional slap shots and can forgive one too many “oops I didn’t explain that” plays, you’ll find a wildly entertaining read here. Overall, I’m giving this one four out of five pucks because, despite the frustrating miscues, I couldn’t stop cheering for Cammy and JP’s comeback season.
